LANGUAGE LEARNING
FULL IMMERSION
Our Language Learning programs in Europe, Latin America, and Caribbean emphasize having fun while speaking French or Spanish in real-life situations. Sixty-five years of experience has taught us that active immersion in local cultures, rather than sitting in a classroom, is what best promotes progress toward fluency. Tap into Putney’s broad network of friends and contacts— from farmers to bakers, journalists to hoteliers — to improve your language skills in practical and dynamic ways. Enhanced fluency leads to lifelong enrichment and provides the key to increased understanding between cultures.
HANDS-ON LEARNING
Our approach to language learning is active and systematic. We encourage students to abandon their inhibitions and fear of making mistakes. Our language-savvy leaders design fun and dynamic exercises to help you develop confidence and encourage cultural immersion. Low student-to-leader ratios allow for individualized attention and a supportive, non-competitive group atmosphere. Carefully planned itineraries take students to famous sights, as well as to off-the-beaten path areas with better opportunities for immersion in local life and culture.
In terms of comprehension, Neely has arrived at the point where she understands the language without the need to first translate in her head. She has also gained a greater sense of independence and self-confidence.

AUTHENTIC INTERACTION
Active participation in real-world scenarios helps unlock your potential while having fun speaking in the target language. Complete a week-long homestay with a local family on Putney’s Language Learning programs in France or Ecuador and the Galápagos. In Spain and the French Caribbean, spend a week participating in structured daily pairings with local young people. Through homestays or daystays, students become immersed in the local culture and make significant strides toward fluency. In Ecuador and the Galápagos, students hone their language skills while completing meaningful community service projects in rural communities.
LANGUAGE PLEDGE
Participants on Putney’s Language Learning programs sign a pledge to speak entirely in the target language throughout the program. This includes interactions with the group leaders, within the group, homestay or daystay families, and with the local people they encounter during the summer. This commitment, combined with an adventurous spirit, is the principal tool for making progress in a foreign language.
Two years of Spanish or French language study is required for 10th – 12th graders, and one year for 8th & 9th graders. The Martinique & Guadeloupe program is open to 9th – 12th graders, and one year of French language study is required.

SEMINARS
Our seminars are specially designed to challenge you intellectually and emotionally. They get you thinking critically and help you focus your interests as you look ahead toward college. Seminars are rigorous, dynamic, stimulating, creative, and fun. They are taught in and out of the classroom for a learning experience that rivals anything you have experienced before.
